Francis Wilson Gunnell is the son of Sarah Wilson and Christopher Gunnell. Christopher's brother John Gunnell and his wife Ann White brought nephew Frank W Gunnell with them to the Great Salt Lake Valley. They had left England with the Louth Branch (LDS Church) by rail to Hull then on to Liverpool where they boarded the SS Zetland under the LDS leadership of Orson Spencer. Departed Liverpool port 24 Jan 1849, arrived at New Orleans 2 Apr 1849. (film NARA M259-30). NOTE: John and Ann Gunnell were also traveling with her baby brother Jonathan White and his family. Traveling up the Mississippi River Jonathan had helped bury many Cholera victims, then at Winter Quarters (Council Bluffs) the plagues took him also, which delayed their departure. From there they joined the Ezra Taft Benson company in crossing the plains. Records show they entered the Great Salt Lake Valley on the 27th of October 1849.
