Francis Edward Hurt

Francis was the first son and second child of nine children born to Francis Hurt Jr. and Elizabeth Shuttleworth. He married Elizabeth Arkwright (daughter of Richard Arkwright Jr. and Mary Simpson. They had one son and seven daughters:

Francis (b. 1803) Mary (b. 1807) Emma (b. 1807) died unmarried Elizabeth "Lizzy" (b. 1810) died unmarried Selina (b. 1813) died unmarried Frances "Fanny" (b. 1816) died unmarried Anne (b. 1821) Catherine (b. 1822 -- died as an infant)

After his father died, he became Lord of the Manor at Alderwasley from 1783 to 1801.

He is buried at Wirksworth Church with his wife - there is an Alabaster monument inside the church that says,

"In memory of/FRANCIS HURT Esq/of Alderwasley/who died January 5th 1801/ aged 47/also of ELIZABETH his widow/who died May 7th 1831 aged 75".

His four unmarried daughters had four stained glass windows put in at Wirksworth Church to remember him by. The inscriptions says,

"Affectionately dedicated/to FRANCIS EDWD HURT/by his son and/daughters AD 1855.(Four stained glass windows - Two each side of Chancel) Also East wlndow, by public subscription."
