"Kendall Family from "Colonial Families of the United States of America", Vol VI, pages 327 and 328, by George MacKenzie
"Francis, b. in England 1620 [incorrect birthdate] came to America and was living in Charlestown, Mass in 1640; he emigrated under the name of Miles to conceal his intentions from his family. At Charlestown he signed the town order for the new town of Woburn and was one of its first and most prominent inhabitants, serving for 18 years on the Board of Selectmen and on various town committees. He owned and operated a mill on one of the streams of Woburn and is described by Sewall as "a gentleman of great respectability and influence in the place of his residence." In a strict Puritan community he had the courage to differ slightly in faith from the majority for which he was duly fined."
"In 1657, Francis Kendall is released from all 'Ordinary Traynings.' Middlesex County Court records, Vol. 1, p 143. There is a well authenticated tradition in the Kendall family that Francis Kendall was stolen from a Ralph Miles in England and brought to this country." Woburn VR 14

Emigrated from Cambridgeshire, England to Massachusetts in 1640
Presidents George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, Vice President Charles Warren Fairbanks, First Lady Barbara Bush, poet/essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, horticulturist Luther Burbank, and inventor Elias Howe are descendants.
George H.W. Bush and his wife Barbara Bush are, in fact, distant cousins; both sharing ancestry with Francis and Mary Kendall.
The KENDALL family, which is very old in England, derives its name from the town of Kendall on the Kent River in Westmoreland County; among the best known of its early representatives was John KENDALL, Sheriff of Nottingham, who was killed at the Battle of Bosworth 1485, while fighting in the army of Richard III. Branches of the family are found in many parts of England and America.
JOHN KENDALL, ancestor of the New England family, was living in Cambridgeshire, England, in 1646, and d. there in 1660.

II. Thomas, emigrated to Reading, Massachusetts, where he was one of the most influential of the early settlers; a Deacon of the church and for many years a Selectman; his only son d. an infant, but, through his eight daughters, he has a large posterity.
FRANCIS KENDALL, b. in England, circa 1620; came to America and was living at Charlestown, Massachusetts, in 1640; he emigrated under the name of MILES in order, it is said, to conceal his intentions from his family. At Charlestown he signed the town orders for the new town of Woburn and was one of its first and most prominent inhabitants, serving for eighteen years on the Board of Selectmen and on various town Committees. He owned and operated a mill on one of the streams at Woburn and is described by Sewell, as “a gentleman of great respectability and influence in the place of his residence.” In a strict Puritan community, he had the courage to differ slightly in faith from the majority for which he was duly fined. Narrative of Francis Kendall...
"Francis Kendall, born about 1620, in Norfolk, England and his brother Thomas were the first of this Kendall line to sail to the New Colony. They arrived on the shores of Massachusetts about 1640, settling in the town of Woburn (Charlestown). Thomas later removed to the town of Reading, MA.
Francis Kendall married Mary Tidd on December 24, 1644. Together they had some nine children. These children in their adult years spread out across the New England landscape creating families of their own.
According to old town records, Francis Kendall, was by trade a miller. These records indicate that upon his death his dwelling house and half the interest in his corn mill passed to the eldest son John. The remaining interest appears to have already been given to sons Thomas, Samuel and Jacob.
Francis was also civic minded. Records tell us that he held the position of selectman for 18 years [1659-1688] and subscribed the town orders. Francis was fined for being late to one such selectmen's meeting in 1674. He was also on the committee to lay out common lands in 1667.
The Kendall genealogy found in these pages mark the direct descendant line of Francis Kendall to the present day. Efforts have been made to be as accurate as time and history will allow, but as with any large undertaking by imperfect humans, mistakes are bound to happen. This is a true labor of love for generations yet to come so please feel free to contact me with any corrections or additional facts you'd like to add."
