Martin Parkes was appointed Ensign in the 10th Reg. U.S. Infantry, on the 2 July 1813 and served till the 26 January 1814 when he was promoted to 3rd Lieut. in which capacity he served till 20 Sept 1814 when he was promoted to 2nd Lieut. and served till 15 Jun 1815 when the Army was disbanded.

Parks, was born in 1797, in North Carolina, and came to Tennessee at a very early date, locating in that part of Lincoln county which is now included in Moore county. He was engaged in farming and for a number of years lived on the present site of Lynchburg, wear he conducted a tavern. He married a Miss Frances Miller, and among their children was Rufus Burton Parks, who was born in Lynchburg in 1827."
