About Francis W. Posey
Squire was on the 1830 census of Autauga county, Alabama. The elder Francis Posey lived seven residences away from Squire. Francis appeared in Alabama by 1820 for he entered land in what is now Chilton county, that was then Autauga County.
Francis Posey Sr. is believed to be the father of Squire Posey. He was listed on the Orangeburg, South Carolina census of 1790 with his wife and children. In 1800 there was no Francis Posey in Orangeburg, but there was one in the Pendleton District, now Anderson county South Carolina. Francis Posey lived near Twenty Three Mile Creek as shown by land deeds drawn when he sold his Pendleton land in 1812. Francis Posey Sr. had nine children. The following children are believed to be correctly identified: Squire (b.c1785), a daughter (b.before 1800), Nathaniel (b.c1795), Francis W. (b.c1800), a daughter (b. unknown), Tabitha (b. c1800, Simon (b. c1800-1810), Ellender (b.1804), and Singleton (b. 1813).
There was no census records for Georgia prior to 1820 except for an 1800 listing for Orglethorp county, due to the burning of Washington D.C. by the British in the War of 1812. However, Francis was found to be in Jasper county Georgia as evidenced by transactions on record ranging from 1809 to 1817. Francis appeared in the Autauga county Alabama records in 1820 as having entered land in Section 26, Township 21, Range 15.
Some of the older living Posey's told of an interesting story, handed down from older generations. In the 1830's whites from the Autauga area were hired to drive the Creek Indians from their lands in eastern Alabama to Oklahoma. It is believed that Squires father, Francis Sr. was one of these whites and that he stayed in Oklahoma and married an Indian woman. It is not certain as to whether this is true, but Francis Posey Sr. disappeared from Alabama records about the time of the Indian removal.
