About Squire Posey
Squire Posey is thought to have been born about 1785 in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He died October 6,1876 in Walker County, Alabama. Squire married (prob early 1813) Jane Pate (mother of all Squire's children) who was born in 1794 in South Carolina and died in 1865 in Coosa county Alabama. His second marriage was to Milly Cagle. Squire and Jane are known to have twelve children: Seaborn (b.1813), Francis Marion (b.1814), Mary "Polly" (b.1817), Allen (b.1820), Martha (b. c1820), James (b.1823), Gilbert (b.1826), Drusilla (b.1827), Singleton (b.1830), Charles (b.1832), Elijah (b.1835), and Andrew (b.1839).
It is not certain who the parents of Squire Posey were, however, based on facts now in evidence it is believed that his parents were Francis and Milley Posey. Since families or close relatives tended to move westward together it was expected that the parents of Squire would appear to be among the Poseys living near him. Census records of Orangeburg, South Carolina from 1790 lists three males under age 16 living with Francis Posey. There is no other Francis recorded on the census. The 1830, Autauga county Alabama, census shows Francis Sr., Squire, Francis W. and three young males, believed to be Nathaniel, Singleton, and Simon living near each other. Francis Sr. is the only one of an age to have been the father of Squire and the others.
Little is known about the life of Squire Posey until he was drafted by the Army in Jasper county Georgia on August 1, 1814. He served with Captain Green's Company of the Militia until February 1, 1815, and was stationed at Fort Mitchell, near the present day Phenix City, Alabama. His company was engaged in guarding supply trains from Fort Mitchell to Fort William, Alabama. Fort William was located on the Coosa River at the mouth of Cedar Creek, six miles below Talladega Springs, Alabama. The fort was erected by Andrew Jackson shortly before the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, fought on March 27,1814. It is likely that these excursions into Alabama were the basis for the movement of the Posey families from Georgia to this section of Alabama. Squire's military records, at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., describe him as being 5' 10" tall, grey-eyed, dark haired, and fair complexion.
Squire Posey was still living in Jasper county, Georgia at the time of the 1820 census. That census showed his age as between 26 and 45 years. His wife Jane Pate, whom he married in 1812 or 1813 is thought to have been the daughter of James Pate, who was listed on the same census with wife, two daughters, and six sons.
Squire came to Alabama in approximately 1825 or 1826, since a son, Gilbert, born in 1826, listed Alabama as his birth place. Squire was on the 1830 census of Autauga county, Alabama. The elder Francis Posey lived seven residences away from Squire. Francis appeared in Alabama by 1820 for he entered land in what is now Chilton county, that was then Autauga County.
Between 1830 and 1837, Squire moved to Coosa county, Alabama, just across the Coosa River. Coosa county had been opened to settlers in 1832 when it became a part of the state of Alabama at the time the Indians were removed to Oklahoma. By 1840, Squire's oldest son, Seaborn, had married and moved to Randolph county Alabama. The 1850 census in Coosa County listed Squire as being 60 years of age, and birthplace as South Carolina. Squire's wife, Jane, died in 1856. Her burial place is unknown. Both Squire and Jane were charter members of the Union Springs Baptist Church in the Marble Valley community of Coosa county. On January 30, 1858, Squire married Milly Cagle.
Squire lived in Coosa county during the Civil War. Four sons and at least three grandsons were wounded and/or killed in the war. This family, like many others in the South, suffered severely in the war. The wives and children at home were subjected to providing the necessities of life for themselves without the aid of the men in the community. They plowed the fields by day, spun, wove, and preserved food by night. Squire moved north to Winston county Alabama in 1872 and then to Walker county Alabama in 1874. On March 8,1872, Squire applied for the pension due him for his military service in the early 1800's. He drew a total of $165.00 before his death October 6,1876. It is thought that he lies in an unmarked grave, somewhere near the Larissa Post Office (his mailing address), on the Walker-Winston county line. A memorial stone, obtained from the Department of the Army, was erected in 1968 at Bethlehem Church in the Posey's Mill community, in memory of Squire.
