Pioneer of 1846 Dies - Another of the Oregon pioneers has gone to the final reward. This time death has claimed Frances Ann Savage, whose maiden name was Brisbin and who was born in Illinois, October 17, 1828. She departed this life at the home of her daughter, Lizzie Crain of Dillie, Washington County, September 18th, 1909. The deceased was united in marriage to Morgan R. Savage, while the two were making their trip across the plains, June 18, 1846. Their trip was by ox team and a very long and tedious one, taking from the first of April to the latter part of December. The first winter was spent near Independence, and during the following season, or in 1847; they located on a Donation Land claim near Airlie. This was sold to Greenberry Smith, then living near Blodget valley in the vicinity of Philomath. The deceased has been a resident of Summit since 1867, but she has been a resident of Benton County for sixty-two years. She was preceded to the spirit world by her husband, Sept. 7, 1904. There was born to them twelve children, eleven of whom survive their parents. They are Martha Jane Miller, of Summit; John Savage, of Lincoln County; Geo. Savage, of Marcola, Lane County; Charles Savage, of Summit; Addie Thrasher, of Summit; Lydia Hulbert, of Linn county; Dollie Turner, of Pendleton; Mary Morrow, Lizzie Crain, and Thomas Savage, of Dillie, and Ida Borgen, of San Francisco. The remains were taken to Summit where they were laid away by the side of the husband who had gone before. The funeral was conducted by Rev. S.M. Savage, who died 18 September at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.H. Crain, at Dilley, was born in Illinois 17 October 1828. She was married to Morgan Savage on the plains in 1846. To them was born a family of 12 children, 11 of whom survive. These are: Mrs. Jasper Miller of Summit; John Savage of Lincoln County; George Savage of Lane County; Charles Savage of Summit; Mrs. Frank Thresher of Summit; Mrs. L. Hulbert of Linn County; Mrs. Dolly Turner of Pendleton; Mrs. J.E. Morrow of Washington County; Mrs. J.H. Crain of Dilly; T.J. Savage of Dilley; and Mrs. Ida Burgen of San Francisco. Mrs. Savage and her husband first settled on a Donation Land Claim in Benton County near the present town of Airlie. In 1876 they moved to Summit, where Mr. Savage died 7 September 1904. The story of Mrs. Savage's trip across the plains is one of thrilling adventure. Becoming separated from the main emigrant train, Mr. and Mrs. Savage and her father went without food for days while crossing the lava beds in southeastern Oregon. Much of the time they waded through snow and slush, and reaching western Oregon in late December, Mrs. Savage's father, exhausted, became sick and died. His body was buried in Cow Creek Canyon. Pushing on, Mr. and Mrs. Savage secured dried salmon from Indians and finally made their way to Independence, in Polk County. [The Oregonian, Portland, Oregon, 7 Oct 1909]
