In the late nineteenth century, the government of Don Francisco Menendez (El Salvador), decided to improve the quality of teachers and teaching and requested that Colombia sent three educators, (including my grandfather), to assist in establishing a new system of higher education in the Central American country. It was thus that, eventually, the three teachers arrived and introduced elements of modern pedagogy in higher education programs of that era and laid the groundwork for new colleges for teachers in El Salvador. At the time my grandfather was very young, and his first charge - before turning 20 years old - was Deputy Director of the Normal School of San Salvador.
He married my great grandmother, Esperanza Arango Quezada, a real Spanish lady resident in Colonial Cuba, where her parents and uncles had important sugarcane plantations. Esperanza's family eventually decided to leave the island. The ship docked in El Salvador, someone advised them to stay there… the coffee plantations were very good (all of them were fleeing from Cuba, where the political situation, the rebellion of the slaves with the resulting fires and sugar estates war were already unsustainable). Their children were born in the following order: Herminia, Maria Teresa, Maria Esperanza (my grandmother), Francisco, Ana María, Guillermo and Consuelo.
Francisco was established in San Salvador. It was illustrious and respected; at home was visited and stayed great men passing through El Salvador (Porfirio Barba Jacob (Miguel Ángel Osorio Benítez), Ruben Dario, José Santos Chocano, etc). From the wonderful literary evenings at Gamboa's home memories were kept by child Esperanza Gamboa Arango, my grandmother, she herself told me how kind and friendly were the visitors, who always had sweet words for her. Rubén Darío wrote a poem for her! Yes, my great-grandfather was illustrious, he was a Gamboa Herrera!
There is a school in San Salvador that bears his name: School "Francisco A. Gamboa".
In October of 1915 was established at the National Palace in San Salvador the Teachers Association "Francisco A. Gamboa" (See "The Golden Book of La Prensa Grafica").
Francisco was, literally, teacher of teachers, among his students was Mr. Saul Flores and other famous Salvadoran and American educators.
