The founder of this family in Acadia was François Gautreau, a young Frenchman from the Poitou region of France who migrated to Acadia around 1632 with the group brought by governor Issac de Razilly. His first wife was an Amerindian of the Micmac nation who is known only by her Christian name, Marie. She died around 1640, leaving two children, Marie and Charles, born around 1636 and 1638. Charles moved to Charlesbourg, Quebec, where he married Françoise Cousin in 1665. There were other Gautreau families, from other lines, who settled in Quebec during the 17th century, including those of Gilles Gotereau and of Nicolas Gautreau, both from the diocese of La Rochelle in France. Around 1645 François Gautreau remarried Edmée Lejeune. Edmée gave a second family of nine children to François. He had settled at Port-Royal where his children married into the oldest Acadian families. One of his daughters, Renée, married the king's engineer, Jean de Labat surnamed the Marquess. His children, Claude and Charles settled at Grand-Pré (Village des Gautreau). Their children were deported to New England and others found a haven in Quebec. The Gautreaus of the Tracadie area are descended from Mathurin Gautreau, son of François and of Marie Vincent who, at the time of the deportation, married Rosalie Daigle. He sought refuge in Quebec but in 1779 he settled on the Saint John river. In 1786 Mathurin Gautreau sold his property and moved his family to Memramcook. After a few years he felt the urge to move again, this time to Tracadie with his Comeau relatives. He and his wife died there. His son François was one of the first teachers in the area but later moved to Barachois. In the Memramcook area can be found a "Village des Gautreau". Francois emigrated to Acadia ca. 1632 with the group brought by governor Isaac de Razilly. Francois' first wife was an Amerindian of the Micmac nation who is only known by her Christian name, Marie. She died ca. 1640. Francois and his family settled in Port Royal, Acadia where he died before 1693. Edmee is said to have been born 1623 in Acadia (probably in a Micmac village close to the first fortat Port Royal) and that her father, who probably came to Acadia in 1611 with Poutrincourt and Biencourt, is said to have married a Micmac woman. That Edmee's mother was a Micmac has not been established as fact, but subsequent Lejeune generations were documented as having married Micmacs.

Historical notes:
October 5, 1687: Francois Gaudreau (Gautreau/Gautrot) signed a certificate for the work of the Governor of Aulnay; so he arrived in Acadia before 1650, the year of the death of Aulnay (ANF, Col. CI ID. Volume II, fol 85).

2 December 1705: Expropriation of "joining the side of the old fort" location of Port Royal (ibid flight V. fol. 157). As Francois Gaudreau had been dead for more than twelve years, it must be assumedthat his heirs were the owners of this land in 1705.

Biography

François Gautrot migrated from France to Acadia.
Flag of Acadia
François Gautrot is the ancestral patriarch of the Acadian Gautrot family.

Francois was from Martaize, region of Loudon, Departement of la Vienne, France[2] According to census records, Francois was born around 1613. He was among the first settlers in Acadia.[3] He signed an attestation in favour of the accomplishments of Governor d'Aulnay, which means he was in Acadia before 1650, the year d'Aulnay died.[4]> He may have arrived as early as 1636.[citation needed]

Francois married twice. Around 1635 he married Marie, whose last name is not known. They had two children: Marie and Charles. Francois' first wife died sometime prior to 1644, as he married a second time around that year. His second wife was Edmee Lejeune, sister of Catherine Lejeune. Between 1645 and 1668, the couple had nine children: Marie, Jean, Renée, Marguerite, François, Claude, Charles, Jeanne and Germain.[5] [6]

Francois owned a lot adjoining the side of the old Fort which was was expropriated from his heirs in 1705 to extend the Fort in Port-Royal) [5]. It is not clear how long the family lived there.

In 1654, the family would have witnessed Port-Royal's capture by Robert Sedgwick, who led 300 British soldiers and volunteers.[7]Although the commander of Port Royal left for France, most Acadians, including the Gautrot family, remained in Acadia. They were permitted to retain their land and belongings and were guaranteed religious freedom.[8] Dunn describes life in Acadia during the 16 years of nominal British rule:

". . .most of the Port-Royal population moved upriver away from the town. Using the agricultural practices initiated under D'Aulnay, the Acadians dyked and cultivated extensive salt marshes along the river and raised livestock. Through necessity, residents had reached an accommodation with New England traders who had become their sole source for the goods that they could not produce themselves... New England traders exchanged their goods for Acadian produce and furs... There were seventy to eighty families in the Port Royal area in 1665."
By 1671 the British had ceded Acadia to France and French settlement resumed.[9] In 1671 the family homestead in Port Royal had 16 cattle and 6 sheep[10].

In 1678 Francois and Edmee (spelled Aymee) lived in Port Royal with two sons Claude and the younger Charles (where are the younger children Jeanne (who would be about 13 and not dead) and Germain (who would have been 10?)[11]. In any case, all the children had fledged by 1686 when Francois and Emee lived by themselves in Port Royal, though Claude is listed next so presumably they lived next door to each other.[12]

Francois died between the 1686 and 1693 Census, as Aimee is listed as living by herself in 1693.[13]

Francois is the progenitor of all the Acadian Gauterots as he is the first Gautrot in Acadie, and the only Gautrot to arrive in Acadie from France. [14]The Gautrots were among the first Acadians to arrive in Louisiana beginning in 1765.[15]
