Frans was 13 years old when his father Francois died. As the oldest son he became his mother’s right hand man and grew up quickly to handle the responsibilities of the farm. He learnt French from his mother and grew up fully bilingual. He was a devout churchman and actively involved in church affairs throughout his life. At the age of 33, Frans bought two farms, D’Oliphantskop and Nabygelegen, not far from both Patatskloof and De Krakeelhoek. Later in the same year he married Anna Marais, who was the daughter of his cousin Aletta Rousseau from L’Arc d’Orleans. Frans was 14 years older than Anna and they had 6 children who reached maturity. Anna died in 1777 while Frans lived for another 12 years and died at the age of 81 in about 1789.
