Frank A (Patrick Francis) Drew

(divon lan, Feb 2018) the identification of Frank Drew from Clonmel, Ireland, with the Frank Drew who died in Chicago in 1909, is based on 23andMe predicting that Kyle Rost and I are 3rd cousin based on our DNA similarity, and comparing our ancestry - this is the only known possible connection. Kyle knows nothing about Frank's origins, and I have no information at all about him.

(Kyle Rost, Feb 2018): Frank Drew was working at a Chicago company that, I believe, was called Acorn Manufacturing Co. He may have been a manager or held an educated position. My grandmother, Bertha, would have been perhaps 15 years old and also worked at Acorn. A romance started, they married, and in 1908 had a child, my mother, Berenice. However, at some point prior to Berenice's birth, the marriage failed and Frank Drew was gone. I have not been able to find any record of Frank Drew to tell me more. At some point, perhaps around 1909, Frank Drew died either by accident or suicide, going out a window of his apartment. My great uncle was perhaps 10 years old and went to see what he could learn about the death. It was known that Mr. Drew drank heavily. He may have been intoxicated, sitting in a rocking chair by the window, and rocked out. Then again, . . . . You would think the Chicago newspapers would have carried some sort of story or death notice but I have not found it. So, Frank Drew was quite the unknown man to us in later generations, even including my mother, but apparently he was my grandfather.

(divon lan, later in Feb 2018): - Frank A was married to Ruby (or Rubie) A Carpenter in 05 Jan 1897 Chicago, Ruby born est 1870. Rubie - In the 1900 census, Ruby and Frank living together, no children. Frank appears as born in April 1869 in Ireland (same as Patrick Francis), and immigrated in 1887, age 18. I couldn't find any other document mentioning Ruby after 1900. - On 6/11/1906 Frank had a son, also named Frank, with a woman called Alice Dahlstrom. On the birth certificate the name of the boy appears as Frank Drew, and the father as born in 1869 in England. However, interestingly, in the birth register the boy is listed as Frank Dahlstrom - taking his mother's name. There is also no marriage certificate and no other record at all of Frank and Alice as a couple. Therefore it is reasonable to conclude that this birth was out of wedlock. - On the birth certificate of Berenice Drew, the father is listed Frank A Drew - the same name as Ruby's husband - age 35 born in Jamaica. The inconsistent age and birthplace might be an indication of Bertha actually not knowing too much about Frank and not having contact with him. There is no record of marriage between them. - Given that Frank A was born in the same month, year and country as Patrick Francis, has the same last name, Frank being a common shorthand of Francis, and mostly given that Kyle Rost and Renee Lan are confirmed 2nd cousins by DNA testing on 23andMe, I am quite confident that this is the same person.
