About Frank Hampshire

Frank Hampshire, a shipping clerk, left England for Canada in early 1922; there, on 1 Aug. 1922 in St. Stephen's Church, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, he married Hannah Taylor, born, c.1896, also from Oldham, daughter of William Taylor and Bertha Ellen Henthorn.

Hannah's brother, William Johnson Taylor, joined her in Canada (he was a witness at the wedding), and in 1924 he also got married in the same church.

On 24 Sept. 1924, Frank and Hannah's son, Kenneth Elvin Hampshire, was born in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 1926, the Hampshire family moved from Canada to the States, travelling through Michigan immigration to Chicago, Illinois.

The Hampshire family does not seem to appear on the 1930 US Census record suggesting they had left America by that point.

By the time of the 1939 UK Register, Frank Hampshire was living at 4 Beaumont's Place, Saddleworth, along with his wife, Hannah and son, Kenneth. Frank's date of birth is given as 8 Oct. 1901 and his occupation is "Fitter's Labourer (Aircraft)". Source: Ancestry.co.uk

Kenneth and Hannah do appear again in the 1959 passenger records, travelling back-and-forth between Liverpool and Montreal. Frank does not appear to have joined them, though he would appear to have lived to c.1976, when he died in Oldham. The death record gives Frank's date of birth as 8 Oct. 1901.

There is also a death record for a Hannah Hampshire, born 30 Oct. 1896 who died c.1975 in Oldham.

Kenneth Elvin Hampshire, born 24 Sep. 1924, died c. 1998, in Oldham.

There is also a 1933 passenger record for a Hannah Hampshire, born c.1896, housewife, living at 25 Wallshaw St. Oldham, and an Elvin Hampshire (no Kenneth), born c.1924, scholar, same address, traveling from Montreal to Liverpool; they both give their country of last permanent residence as Canada.

According to the 1911 Census, Frank Hampshire, his parents and his two brothers, were living at 93 and 95 Radcliffe-street, Oldham.

A few years earlier, in 1905, a Frank Hampshire, described as being of "33, Radcliffe-street, Oldham" went missing; it seems likely that it's the same person. Although there do not seem to be any newspaper accounts of Frank's recovery, the evidence of his marriage and death at age 75 indicate his survival.

"Since Wednesday morning a boy named Frank Hampshire, aged three years, has been missing from his home, 33, Radcliffe-street, Oldham. He was wearing a blue serge suit and slipper clogs." (Source: 1 April 1905, Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser, BritishNewspaperArchive.co.uk)
