Frank Tercha

Birth: Mar. 17, 1917 Hamtramck Wayne County Michigan, USA Death: Jan. 11, 1975 Calumet Houghton County Michigan, USA

Frank Tercha was a World War II veteran, having served in the navy from 21 Sept. 1942 until 14 Sept. 1945. He was a long-time member of the Calumet community where the family owned a music store in the downtown area. He was also a member of the Calumet Fire Department. He was working in that capacity when the store caught fire.

Normally, the gas line is shut down from the outside meter, but it had already burned and been destroyed. The only way left to turn off the gas was in the building's basement. Mr. Tercha went in to shut off the gas before it exploded and caused far more damage to the surrounding area. Space was tight with debris falling, etc. He removed his mask thinking it would make navigating easier to the gas shut off line but he got disoriented in the smoke and was overcome.

There were no other decedants named Tercha buried at Lake View Cemetery as of July 2014. One descendant is known to still be living in Calumet.

Because of his duty death the name of Firefighter Tercha is inscribed on the Michigan Fallen Heroes Memorial Monument, Stone 9, Row 19. The monument is located on the northeast corner of the intersection of County Center Drive East (north entrance) and N. Telegraph Rd., on Oakland County's complex at 1200 North Telegraph Road in Pontiac. The memorial has a website on the internet.
