About Franklin Jackson

FRANKLIN JACKSON (September 29, 1797 - December 18, 1855) BROTHER OF DR. ALVAH JACKSON OF EUREKA SPRINGS, ARKANSAS FAME

FRANKLIN JACKSON, the second son of William R. Jackson and ? (Humpheries) Jackson, was born in Georgia on September 29, 1797. Around 1808, he went with his family to Kentucky, where he was reared in Warren and Allen Counties of Kentucky.

On November 25, 1821, Franklin married Rebecca Harris. Rebecca (Harris) Jackson was born June 12, 1805 in Edgefield District of South Carolina to Moses and Rebecca (Griffith) Harris.

Franklin and Rebecca remained in Kentucky until 1838. Their daughter, Susan B. (Jackson) Hendricks was born in Allen County, Kentucky January 7, 1837. Before leaving Kentucky, Franklin's father, William R. Jackson, died and was buried near Russellville, Kentucky.

By the time they left Kentucky in 1838, Franklin and Rebecca Jackson had eight (8) children still living but had lost two (2). They followed their relatives into Missouri, settling in Boone County.

Franklin was Justice of the Peace for many years.

They bought property in Boone County, Missouri and settled down to raise their children, having five (5) more but losing one of them before he grew to be a man.

Franklin and Rebecca raised their family in a log house with one room downstairs and one room upstairs. The log house had a lean-to shed for the kitchen.

They raised tobacco and built a huge Tobacco Barn. After they got their tobacco crop in it, the barn burned and destroyed the entire crop. The farm was 3 or 4 miles from the Missouri River, in the hills. They later bought land near the river bank, across from Marion.

It is interesting to note that while they were in Kentucky, they lived just a few miles from the branches of the Barren River, and, after moving to Missouri and buying and selling several pieces of land, they never were very far from the Missouri River.

Franklin Jackson must have known his health was failing, because, in 1854, about a year before he died, he sold his land in Boone County, Missouri and moved over to Saline County, Missouri, to where several of his older children had moved after their marriages.

Franklin and Rebecca (Harris) Jackson had the following children:

1. Elijah A. Jackson (married ? Wilcox-one son was born, after his father was struck and killed by lightening) 2. William Roger Jackson (married Zerelda Sappington May 5, 1850-11 children were born and lived to be grown) 3. James M. Jackson (died as infant) 4. Mary (Jackson) (died as infant) 5. Clarissa Ann (Jackson) Griffin (born January 12, 1828 and died February 21, 1853, shortly, after giving birth - her daughter, Clara Ann survived, though.) 6. MOSES TERRELL JACKSON (born December 25, 1829 in Allen County, Kentucky) 7. Joseph M. Jackson (married Minerva Attaberry & had twelve children, but the first 3 died-he died and left a widow with nine children.) 8. Robert C. Jackson (died at 17 years old) 9. Benjamin F. Jackson (had 9 or 10 children, all sons except one daughter) 10. Susan B. (Jackson) Hendricks (born in Allen County, Kentucky January 7, 1837-married James Hendricks and had nine children-Susan lived to be over 95 years old.) (We have a letter that she wrote in 1926 about her Jackson Family.) 11. Julia Frances (Jackson) (?) (burned to death in the house, as the Union Soldiers set the house on fire) 12. John Calvin Jackson (was a Southern Soldier and was killed in battle at Pine Bluff, Arkansas) 13. Louisa M. (Jackson) Kime (six children) 14. Oliver Perry Jackson (died July 28, 1926 in Colorado Springs, Colorado-had 3 children) 15. Nancy Jane (Jackson) Teachout (2 children-Hattie and Roger)

Franklin Jackson died December 18, 1855 in Saline County, Missouri.
