Brief overview:

Frans (43), a mineworker, had a prosthetic leg.was tortured for more than four hours, in front of his wife Daleen and children - Gideon (10) and Anuscka (3). His attackers poured boiling water over him, slashed his head open, then strangled him to death with a shoelace. The murderers also dripped molten plastic on Pieterse’s 10-year-old son.

His wife sustained two knife wounds in the left leg and Gideon suffered bruises to his face." The trio made off with a television and a DVD player around 01:00 on Thursday morning.

  • Augostides said they then attempted to break into another house in the neighbourhood. "Fortunately Johan Labushagne and his wife were awakened by the noise and called the police." Police responding to the Pieterse incident rushed to the Labuschagne home and found the three men. Two of them managed to escape by jumping over a wall.

  • On 21st July 2006, the accused, Ernest Khoza (18), made his first appearance two days after Pieterse’s funeral
  • Khoza was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of Pieters, 18 years each on two charges of assault with intent to seriously injure (on Mrs. Pieters and Gideon) and 15 years for burglary. He will serve these sentences concurrently.
  • He has a previous conviction for housebreaking (in 2005) for which he was sentenced to 2½ years in prison. Of this, one year was suspended on the condition that he is not found guilty of burglary within five years. This suspended sentence now takes effect.
