Franz Herde, Jr.

Account of death I had first: (Franz was hurt in a farming accident. A mule in a team kicked him in his head. He underwent surgery to correct swelling and pressure, but the surgery was not successful and he died.)

2nd account of death is combined information from what was recorded as coming from "Selected Death Notices" of a Jackson County Kansas newspaper in 1902 and from The Holton Recorder, April 11, 1901. (My cousin, Edwin Ellis Herde, says "In the old days when traveling in a hay wagon the hay fork was placed in a holder (hole) next to the driver with the points up. Very bad location in a runaway. "

Franz (Frank) Herde, a farmer living on the north line of the Potawatomi [sic: Pottawatomie] Reservation southeast of Holton, died Saturday, April 6, 1901 at the age of 60 years, two month and 16 days.

Last February during a runaway hay wagon accident, he received a head wound from a hay fork. After 2 months of not recovering, he sought relief by submitting to the surgeon's knife. His death resulted from the operation performed in Topeka last week...Buried in the Holton cemetery

The deceased was born in Koppering [sic: Koppernig], Germany, January 21, 1841. He emigrated to America in 1870. In 1872 he married Sophronia [check this] Pagel, who died in 1887. Eleven children were born to the union, six of whom are living, three girls and three boys. He is also survived by two brothers, Johann, living near Hoyt, Douglas township, a town about 6 miles south of Mayetta and Emanuel, living near Mayetta, a town about 9 miles south of Holton.
