About Frederick Baylies, Jr.
The Old Whaling Church was designed by Frederick Baylies, Jr. and built by whaling captains in 1843. Its stately white columns have earned it a reputation as one of the finest examples of Greek Revival architecture in the New England. Though no longer used as a weekly house of worship, the interdenominational Old Whaling Church continues to be used as a venue for weddings, concerts, and community events. Guided tours are also available on weekdays. Tours cost $10 for adults and are free for children under 14 years old. They begin at the Vincent House Museum and last approximately 45 minutes.
The church is today maintained by the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust; contact info@mvpreservation.org for booking information.
