Frederick Samuel Schweitzer

Fred Schweitzer, 93, one of Buchanan County's oldest residents, died at his home in Winthrop last Thursday, July 28. He is survived by 111 living direct descendants.

Mr. Schweitzer was born March 22, 1856, the son of Jacob and Louise Schweitzer, in Cook County, Illinois. He came to Iowa at the age of 18 and married Mary Ella Ironside in 1878. They moved to a farm in Fremont Township in 1891, where they lived until moving to Winthrop in 1925. Mrs. Schweitzer died in 1931. They were the parents of eight children, one daughter and seven sons. They are Mrs. Lily Peck of Independence, Henry and William od Winthrop, Bert of Rowley, Charles of Biggs, California. Two sons Earl and Leon, Preceded their father in death. Mr. Schweitzer is also survived by 38 grandchildren and 65 great-grandchildren and two great-great- grandchildren. One sister, Louise Make, is still in Sacramento, California. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Fawcett funeral home in Winthrop. Burial was in Fleming Cemetery. Five grandchildren, Glenn, William, John, Robert and Arthur Schweitzer, acted as pallbearers.
