About Frederick Syfrett

Frederick Syfrett was born about 1781. His parents were Adam Syfrett and Margaret Wemdisch.
He died in Oct 1849 and is Buried in the Edwards Family Cemetery near Bowman, South Carolina.
He was a Patriot in the American Revolution. "In 1791 he recieved pay for supplies he provided to the Revolutionary War forces." per Harold Syfrett's Book of 1994.

Grave marker in the Edwards cemetery reads: " FREDERICK SYFRETT A native of Orangeburg who departed this life in October 1849, In the 68th year of his age He was a Consistent Member of the Methodist Episcopal Church of this place for many years."
His wife Elizabeth Dukes Syfrett. Her grave marker reads, "IN MEMORY OF ELIZABETH SYFRETT wife of Frederick Syfrett b 25 Sept 1783 d 12 March 1850 67th yr of her age. She was 40 years a worthy member of the Methodist Episcopal Church."

Will Administration
Frederick's heirs listed in the sale of 790 acres after his death were "Alan A. Syfrett, Abraham H. Syfrett, Jesse W. Fairey, Mary A. Fairey, Daniel Smoake, Jane D. Smoake, Lewis Griffis, Elzia G. Griffis, David Smoake, Dicy Smoake, Thomas D. Edwards, Dorcas G. Edwards, Philip Joiner, Sarah M. Joiner, Jos. H. Stokes, Meldrid Stokes"

Note: Spelling of name: The original immigrants were called Syfrid, Syfried, Syfrit, etc. :We use Syfrett which is the correct spelling. The spelling of the name as Syphrett did not come along until much later and was done by a French schoolteacher who insisted that the German ancestry Syfretts spell their name Syphrett. She was wrong of course, but the lines that migrated to Florida continued this spelling.
Silas Asbury Syfrett b.1844 d.1888, eldest son of John Allan Syfrett b.1803 d.1859 and Mary Mercer, son of John Andrew Syfrett b. 1775, son of Adam Syfrett b. 1730, son of Alexander Syfrett b. 1705.
The following was submitted to Harold W. Syfrett's Family Genealogy by descendants of Silas. "Silas Asbury changed the spelling to SYPHRETT when a French teacher stated that was the French spelling and that the name is French."

Gravemarkers of Frederick Syfrett and wife Elizabeth Dukes clearly spells the name Syfrett. I think that gravestones tend to be extremely accurate. No land deeds or other sourced documents give him the first name of William. This is an old error being carried along online.

NOTE:
1.Adam Syfrett was never named Adam Alexander Syfrett. Ref Baptismal records children and marriage record to Margaret. Just plain Adam.
2.Frederick Syfrett was never William Frederick Syfrett. Use the Deeds, the tombstone.

The entire My Heritage Site has William Frederick Syfrett and that is totally incorrect.

Land Grants

  • 1816 October 5, 1816 Frederick received a 999 acre land grant.
  • 1816 October 1, 1816 David Syfrit, 604 acres land grant Orangeburg County (This appears to be near Adam and Frederick)
  • 1818October 15, 1818 Frederick received a 307 acre grant. (When I look at this plat copy in Harold's book, it looks like Frederick's land was surveyed on 14 Sept 1818 from an original large tract of land belonging to Adam Syfrett. Poor copy, but something about this joining lands surveyed for Danl Syfrett at E past by G. Syfrett and past by Bosticks, at W & E by John Bruces land, at N by land to be Danl Finch.)
  • 1818 Adam Syfrett 298 acres land grant Orangeburg County. (This appears to be near Frederick)
  • 1830 Frederick Syphrett 31 acres land grant Orangeburg County
  • 1839 October 17, 1839 a plat for 1000 acres on "Br waters of Pen Branch of Edisto river for Frederick Syfrett." Property was bounded by land of Mrs E. Griffith, Jas Grimes, Riech Edwards, Jas Edwards, F Syfrett, Dukes, Michael Dukes, George Summers, Harry Felder, Christopher Metze, John Cannon. Pen Branch is in Branchville area.
