Names of many "Van Petten" men who fought in the Revolutionary War (our side) had to change their surname to "Van Patten" in order to gain the "land bounty rights" and other benefits promised them, most probably due to a clerical error. 97% to 100% of male Van Petten's changed to Van Patten at or around this time - - who fought. They were born: Van Petten - - but died "Van Patten"
