About Frederick Gottlieb Ziegler
Fred and his family lived in Germany and when the Russian Czar wanted farmers they moved to Russia. When the czar died Fred and his brother Alex immigrated to the US. Fred begame a United States citizen on March 29, 1926. He went to South Dakota to learn English while working as a farmer. He then moved to Chicago.
Fred (Friedrich) arrived Ellis Island January 1, 1914 with his first wife, Wassie (Valentina). He was 20, Wassie 19. He listed his occupation at that time as a locksmith. He met Sadie Ziegler in front of Alladins castle at Chicago's Riverview, an amusement park.
Fred was an auto mechanic and later worked at Radio Steel. A cousin of his got him the job there during the depression. A die fell on Fred's leg and he had been hospitalized for almost a year. They lived in a basement apartment and in their later years lived with Alvis and her family while receiving colbalt treatments for bladder cancer. Fred also had retinitis pigmentosa, a heredity eye disease. He always carried Lifesavers in his pocket ( they were wrapped individually) that he would share with his many grandchildren.
