also von Rochman or von Rochmann

This is what my mother (Elise Rockman Schmidt) told me about our ancestor’s migration to Norway.

Friedrich Wilhelm von Rockman was a younger son in the wealthy von Rockman family in what is now Germany. At that time Germany was not united. It was a loose federation of principalities, which were more often than not at war with one another. The von Rockman Family lost too many sons in these battles. To save the life of the younest, he was sent north to Norway to live. There he settled in, married, and raised his family.

As was the custom in Norway, his sons were raised without the sur-names as we know them. I.e., my grandfather was called Peter Martin Danielsen because his father was Daniel, who was known as Daniel Olison (son of Oli) I believe that it was after my grandfather had migrated to the U.S., in order to settle an estate back in Norway, the von Rockman descendents were asked to change their sur-names to Rockman.
