Freegift Chamberlain

"Stout Chamberlain was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, for which he received a pension starting in 1833. He was the brother of Freegift Chamberlain, who also fought in the Revolution and was likewise pensioned for his service."

Freegift was born in New Jersey. There is an organization, The World Chamberlain Genealogical Society (worldchamberlaingenealogy.org), that has been in existence for over 25 years and they have and are still doing extensive research on the Chamberlain family. The result of their collaborative research has taken Freegift's lineage back 5 generations to a Henry Chamberlin who came from England. Another researcher has done phenomenal research in the English records and proven where Henry was from in England.

According to a story in the South Bend Tribune, dated July 04, 2004 Freedom Chamberlain was born in England October 20, 1758. When he came to America he enlisted in the Pennsylvania State Troops from Washington County, Pennsylvania. According to the story, he enlisted in September 1776 and served a little over six years as a private and a little over three months as an Indian Spy.
The article says that Chamberlain married Elizabeth Whitaker and they were bless with seven children.
He died in January 1838 and the article confirms his burial at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.
The grave is also marked with a military memorial.
