F. E. Lorenz 1890-1959 " With the passing of Fritz Lorenz on 6th December, the International Brewing Trade has not only lost one of its best known figures, but also one of its best friends. He was educated at the Weihenstepban Technical High School, and after a practical training in brewing, he went into the family malting business of Klatscher and Lorenz in Czecho slovakia. During 30 years' work on the Continent, and as a result of widespread travel, the name of Lorenz was already established a symbol of authority and service in the Malting and Brewing Trade. But Fritz Lorenz had his share of trouble. At the peak of his career he came to this country when Hitler had invaded his own land, and despite the adversity from which he was then suffering he was able to help others of his countrymen who were in an even worse position than himself. During his life in the Brewing Trade I think he collected more friends than anyone else has ever done, the sincere friendship and goodwill which he possessed being imme diately apparent to all with whom he came in contact. I remember full well in 1946 when I had the honour and pleasure of going on a mission with him to the United States and Canada, the enthusiasm with which he was greeted at every stop we made on our journey from East to West. Fritz Lorenz, by this time an able linguist, was largely responsible for the building of the export trade in malt from Great Britain to every corner of the earth, and from his new home he was able to continue the work which he enjoyed so much. He will be missed by his friends in every country of the world, and most of all by his British colleagues with whom he has worked during the last 20 years. H. A. D. Cherry-Downes."
