FRIEDRICH WILHELM JACOBY VON GRABOWSKY was born in approximately November 1830 if his age at death of 68 years and 9 months on his death certificate is accurate, probably in a part of Poland belonged then to Prussia. He enlisted in the British army at the age of 25 (27 August 1855) and became a Corporal in the British German Legion. His army documents show that he was a Book Binder from Asperden and his next of kin was his sister, Amalie Brenns from Spandau.

After the end of Crimean War he married Emma Charlotte Jowers in a mass military wedding in Colchester, England in October 1856 before they sailed together to East London, South Africa on the 3 barque vessel, Mersey. They were initially despatched to a military outpost known as Greytown in the foothills of the Amatola Mountains near Stutterheim, whereafter they moved to King Williamstown.
