Thomas Jefferson Coffee was born on February 16, 1805 in Burke Co., NC, the son of Ambrose Coffee of Albemarle County, VA and Mildred “Millie” Moore. This information was found in a letter written to "Jefferson" Coffee by his uncle, Rice Coffee in 1844. He married Malinda Graves Haley in 1827 in Hinds County, Mississippi, and all of their children were born in that state. The family moved to Brazoria County, Texas between 1842 and 1846 when Thomas J. Coffee's name appeared on the Brazoria County Tax List. The first deed involving the family was dated April 1849.
Several books and articles claim that Thomas J. Coffee of Brazoria County was a general under Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812, but he was only seven years old in 1812. In fact, General John Coffee of Lauderdale County, Alabama served under Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812.
