Lived on his mother-in-law's farm Olievenkloof in Smithfield at the outbreak of the Anglo Boer War.
He surrendered in Winburg on 10 June 1900 (two weeks after the Annexation of the Free State and capture of Johannesburg). He signed the oath of neutrality at Smithfield on 28 June 1900. He was sent to Bethulie concentration camp with his family on 28 April 1901. (Unique ID 93387) 6 Jun 1901: Petronella Cornelia Verster is born in the camp. 6 Sep 1901: Petronella Cornelia Verster dies of inflammation. 12 Sep 1901: Gerbrecht Marie Verster dies of measles (age 1 year 8 months) Returned home on 19 July 1902
