"Kaiser" Wilhelm II the "German Emperor" was born in Berlin in 1859. Gaetana (age 32) was commissioned to breast feed Wilhelm II after his mother nearly died in childbirth. It was a breech birth and doctors thought both Wilhelm and his mother would die as few babies survived this procedure in the mid-19th century. Doctors gave up on Wilhelm who appeared to be dead and gave their full attention to saving the mother’s life. Doctors were surprised when the baby lived but the baby’s arm was severely dislocated during birth and failed to grow. Wilhelm (1859-1941) was the last German Emperor (Kaiser) and King of Prussia, whose bellicose policies helped to bring about World War One.
