About Gary Toleman

Gary Toleman (1962 - 2003)

Brief overview:

Gary (40), a banana farmer, formerly from Gedding near Stowmarket UK, Powerboat Champion and son of Ted Toleman, also a former powerboat champion and Formula One boss, was shot dead in front of his fiancée, Marlet Jordaan, in a service station forecourt in Hazyview, on 18th October 2003.

A gang of four armed males, driving a blue Vauxhall Vectra, had followed Gary and Marlet to the petrol station. Whilst Marlet was in the garage shop buying a loaf of bread, they dragged Gary from the pick-up truck. As Marlet walked towards the truck, she saw one of the gunmen holding a gun in Gary's mouth. She pleaded with the gunman not to shoot him. Even though he had already handed over the car keys to the vehicle and not resisting, he shot Gary anyway.

The gang stole the truck, which was found not far from the garage as the immobiliser kicked in.

In November 2007, Michael spoke to the media and said, “You would think the South African police or even the British Embassy would be able to give us the details but they don't seem to know what we are talking about. I haven't thought for one minute about giving up but I don't ever expect the police to find who did it. I just want to see their files on the case to make sure they did all they could do - that isn't too much to ask.”

"Michael Toleman said he last heard from South African police about 18 months ago and that he had lost confidence in the investigation after being passed around officers."

In 1993, the Toleman family moved to South Africa to run a banana plantation, but his twin brother, Michael, and his family returned because of the escalating violence in the country. Gary's ex- wife Penny and his three children Alexander (18), Paul (16), and Kara (14), returned to England and now live near Colchester.
Unfortunately there is no reference to a South African Police spokesperson making mention of Gary Toleman's murder, or any further updates, as mainstream media in South Africa did not report on the incident.

Mr Toleman's entire family moved to South Africa in 1991 to run a banana plantation near the Kruger National Park from Suffolk when Mr Toleman sold his transport business. but Michael and his family returned to live in Bacton, because of the rising violence in the country, as did Gary's ex-wife and their three children.
Ted Toleman and Gary stayed on, but Ted left South Africa in 1999 after the death of his wife, Dianna. He is now mainly retired, but is still involved in boat-building and consultancy work. "Gary stayed in South Africa under very difficult circumstances. He tried very, very hard just to have a good life there," said Mr Toleman.
