Biography

Gaston's citation reads:

On 11 July 1978, Gaston Langelier, Guy Fournier and Marc Drouin set an example of selfless courage in protecting other staff members in the Laval Institution in Montreal whose lives were threatened by five armed prisoners in this maximum security penitentiary. As Mr. Langelier, then assistant director of security at the Institution and several members of the staff were being forced down a flight of stairs, he disarmed one of the inmates. In the scuffle that followed, Guy Fournier and Marc Drouin rushed forward to help the assistant director. Both were subsequently shot at point-blank range by another inmate who had retrieved the weapon. Mr. Fournier died instantly and Mr. Drouin was severely wounded. At the cost of being shot himself, Mr. Langelier tried again to disarm his captor. He was wounded three times but persisted until the gunman was overcome.

Le 11 juillet 1978 à Montréal, Gaston Langelier, Guy Fournier et Marc Drouin, tous trois membres du personnel du pénitencier Laval, établissement à sécurité maximale, ont donné un bel exemple de courage et d'altruisme en se portant au secours de leurs collègues tombés entre les mains de cinq prisonniers armés. Alors que M. Langelier, directeur adjoint de la sécurité dans cet établissement était forcé de descendre un escalier avec d'autres otages, il réussit à désarmer l'un des détenus. Une mêlée s'ensuivit et Guy Fournier ainsi que Marc Drouin se portèrent à l'aide du directeur adjoint. Un autre détenu, s'étant emparé de l'arme à feu, tira sur eux à bout portant. M. Fournier fut tué sur le coup et M. Drouin fut grièvement blessé. Au risque d'être abattu à son tour, M. Langelier tenta à nouveau de désarmer son ravisseur. Il fut blessé à trois reprises, mais parvint à maîtriser son assaillant.
