From the Inventory of the various reports sent from the Cape to the Dutch East India Company (VOC) administration for the year 1681 it would appear that various series of accounts were kept. The Vrijboek would appear to be an annual record of the monetary transactions between the freeburgers and the VOC.

The Journael en grootboeck van de vrijluijden for 1681, consists of several parts.

Firstly (folios 568r to 568v) a list of Freeburgers and the balance of their account with the Company as at 1st July 1681. Each Freeburger is preceded by a number which refers to the page of his entry in the Vrijboek.

Secondly (folios 569r to 573v) a month by month record of transactions.

Thirdly, (folios 574r to 575r) a similar listing to that in the first part above, this time with the balances on the last day of December 1681.

And fourthly the section entitled Vrijboek van 't Jaar 1681 (folios 575r to 606r), which is transcribed below.

The Vrijboek appears to record the final balance of each free settler's transactions with the Company for the year stated and the balance to be transferred to the new transaction book. Both amounts are invariably the same.

These accounts are recorded in the form of double page spreads, the settler's name and identification (place of birth, date and ship of arrival, occupation and, if appropriate, date released from the Company's service), the final balance for the year on the left hand page, the balance to be transferred to the new year on the right hand page. And usually three settler names to each double page spread.

The first double page spreads have been transcribed completely, personal detail plus the accounting records. Since these accounting records contain little of vital interest, for the transcript below, from folio 579v onwards this accounting information has been omitted so as to make clearer and more readable, the personal information.
