About Gen. Joseph Karge
'Per "Adventures in Genealogical Research" by Edward Linkowski..the father of General Karge has NOT been definitely found; the records of St Matthew's Roman Catholic Church in Opaleica were burned by German troops in World War II. Other sources say that they believe he was youngest of seven children and father was an officer in Napoleon's army but no names have yet, here or in Poland, been definitively found for his parents .'
Joseph Karge, son of UNKNOWN (see above), was b. in Poland on July 4,1823; attended schools in Breslau and the College de France in Paris; was scheduled to continue his education in Berlin when he was forced,by compulsory enlistment, to military service;and when the revolution broke out in 1848 he was wounded. After recovering in Paris he returned to Poland and was captured. He escaped (all of this is based on what very little is known about his life pre-America) and decided to seek asylum in America, arriving in New York in 1851 ; m. with THEODOSIA MARIA BALDWIN, dau. of David J. Baldwin and Nancy Hall. She was b. in Orange, NJ, in 1820.
When President Lincoln's proclamation of April 15,1861 called into service 75,000 men, Joseph Karge offered his services to the government. Utilizing his military training,he turned the 1st New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry from an undisciplined, dispirited mob into a unit which earned outstanding battle records and also recruited the 2nd NJ Volunteer Cavalry, which he commanded as a regiment, soon a brigade, in the General Benjamin Grierson's cavalry raids in Tennessee and Alabama. The number and scope of the battles and skirmishes in which he was involved are many, including the battles at Leesburg and Fredericksburg. Entering as a Volunteer, he ultimately received the brevet of Brigadier General, US Volunteers and was known for his courage and conduct. Leaving the service after severe wounds, he became a Professor of Languages at Princeton College, New Jersey where he became a Professor of Languages and served for over 20 years.
While much is known about his military service, the same cannot be said of his early life. His records, tho ample in regard to military matters, are woefully void of information about those years.
Clarification to CC Baldwin's data: In 1862 he rec'd commission as Lt-Col in the 1st NJ Cavalry; in 1863 he rec'd authority to raise the 2nd NJ Cavalry as Col. (see LDS records)
Children were: Ladislaw, in 1877, a law student; and Ronnald.
