His brief life: (to be written later)
His demise: On August 28, 1916,Thomas died by friendly fire in a trench in Moquet Farm, France. A High Explosive Shell fell on his trench, killing him and several other soldiers. Survivors dug his body up and buried him near the trench.
Thomas's name is engraved in four places that we know of:
1) At the War Memorial of Maryborough in Victoria, Australia. (Photo in his profile)
2) On the entrance pillar of Princess Park, also in Maryborough, Victoria, Australia. (Photo in his profile)
3) On the Roll of Honour panel 72 in the Commemorative Area of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia. See www.awm.gov.au/research/people/roll_of_honour/
4) At spot No 26 of the Australian War Memorial at Villers Bretonneux in France. The memorial is the Australian National Memorial erected to commemorate all Australian soldiers who fought in France and Belgium during WWI, and especially those of the dead whose graves are not known. For general info, 10,700 Australian servicemen actually named died in the battlefields of Somm, Aras, German Advance of 1918 and the Advance of Victory. Simple numbering of Australian Units make finding a name less difficult. See www.webmaster.net/cwgc/villers_bret_mem_html
