"The eldest son of William Munro, he was born at Druid's Stoke, Gloucestershire, in 1818. He entered the 39th Foot as an ensign on 20 January 1834 and, in a manner that was unusual when officers purchased their promotions, remained with the 39th for almost the whole of the next 31 years. "
