Beloved wife of Paul Winkler, who passed away in January 1999; devoted mother to Carolyn (Winkler) Gibson, grandson Mark and his wife, Melanie Gibson; great-grandmother to Samuel, William, and Emma Gibson. She had three nephews, Richard Madison and family, Dr. Gerald Zumwalt and family, and Samuel Zumwalt and family; a niece, Jan Lawless and family. She had special friends, Darrell, Ann, Emily and Haley Becker, who were like family visiting her often with flowers and special gifts at holidays. In the early 1800s, her ancestors built the first hewn log house in now St. Charles County, erecting it 30 miles west of St. Louis. In times of Indian trouble, Zumwalt's log house became a fort and to this day is called Fort Zumwalt. The Zumwalts and American pioneer Daniel Boone often gathered in the Zumwalt home with noted Indian Chief Black Hawk. Black Hawk spent one winter at the Zumwalts'. The family is being served by the Hanks-Gress Funeral Home in Hardin, where visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of service at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, at the funeral home.
