RAUTENBACH GEORG FRIEDRICH. – According to his will born at “Trebnitz in Saxen”, but according to marriage registration at Tremnitz, (There are four Trebnitz in the Province of Saxony and one Tremnitz in the former electrorate of Saxony).In the Dutch East India archives they give his birthplace as Treenitz/Trenitz. He left Texel in Holland aboard the ship Rozenburg on 26/05/1757 & Arrived on24/10/ 1757 in the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) . He was a soldier for the Dutch East India company& his last pay was dated 24/11/1761 according to invoice 5207 in there archives. He could read & write , there is a letter in the archives in Cape Town in his writing in a mix of German, Dutch, & developing Afrikaans. By 1761, resident at Swellendam. ~ 18.4.1762 Maria Magdalena Ferreira, widow of Franz Haarhof (q.v.) (Marr. Reg. of Paarl). She had 4 children from her marriage to Franz Haarhof & 9 children. + 1805. (GMR 1758-61) He appears to have a son in Germany to Johann Christoffel Rautenbach that also came to South Africa in 1780 Rq. 1761: 182; G.R. nr. 754; Test. O.C. 45: 71.) Cf. Georg Friederich RAUTENBACH was born about 1724/1734 in Tremnitz, Greiz, Thüringen, Deutschland. He died in 1805 in Swellendam, Kaap de Goede Hoop. He married Maria Magdalena FERREIRA on 18 Apr 1762 in Paarl.

Georg Friedrich Rautenbach born 1734-Tremnitz, Zwick, Sachen Germany. He left Texel in Holland on 26/05/1757. He arrives on the ship Roosenburg at the Cape of Good Hope on 27/10/1757 , employed as soldier by the Dutch East India Company (VOC). His last pay check from Dutch East India company is dated 24/11/1761

On 18 April 1762 married Maria Magdalena FERREIRA, widow of Franz Haarhof (married) 21/11/1751) and eldest daughter of Ignatio Leopoldus Ferreira and Martha Terreblanche.

Maria Margaretha baptised at Paarl 30 Aug 1733.

Marries Rautenbach 18 April 1762. Had 4 children from Haarhof marriage.

Georg was accompanied by his 10 year old son, Johan Christoffel Rautenbach born at Tremnitz, Sakse.

Georg arrived at the Cape in 1757 as a soldier from Tremnitz, Saxony in Germany. He was in the service of the HOIK and arrived on the ship "Roosenburg". He served at the Castle in Cape Town, where he became second in command. He was discharged in 1762. In 1761 he became a citizen of Swellendam. From 1767 he lived on "Melkhoutessenbosch" Farm, (2156 Morgan) in the curve of the Gouritz River, 10 km from Herbertsdale. After his death his son Gerrit Hendrik inherited the farm. In 1777 Georg acquired the Brakenfontein Farm on the western bank of the Boesmansrivier. Rautenbachsdrif was in those days the only passable way through the Boesmansrivier. At that time it was the main route between Algoa bay (Port Elizabeth) and Albanie (Grahamstown) and the 1820 Settlers called it: "The Gateway to Settler Land". Famous travellers such as Beutler, Swellengrebel, Winckleman, Barrow, Lichtenstein and general JW Janssens used the drift. Now Rautenbachsdrif lies on the Long Lee farm. The "Shamwari" game reserve has now been developed on the farm. In 1785 Georg was made a Lieutenant in the Swellendam Citizen's Force and later a member of the town and district council until 1791. He makes provision in his will for his son Johann Christoph from a previous marriage in Germany and Maria Magdalena's four daughters from a previous marriage.”

Maria Ferreira was of Portuguese descent.
