Al, also known as G. A., was the first child born in Monroe County. He was living with his mother in 1880 in Sparta and employed as a butcher at the time of the census that year. He married Julia T. Nolan in 1883, the year following his mother's death, and they lived their lives in Sparta. Apart from operating a grocery store in Sparta for a short period, his occupation was that of butcher or meat market owner his entire life, including running the meat section of brother-in-law John Eckel's grocery in La Crosse for a few years in the late 1880s. Al and Julia had five children, the oldest of whom, Archibald W. (Archie), was the grandfather of this writer and who carried on the tradition of the Hoffman family's involvement in Sparta in the meat market business. G. A. and Julia Hoffman are buried in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, Sparta.
