About George L. Babcock
George L. Babcock came from Boston. He enlisted in the 44th Massachusetts Civil War unit as a Musician and given the rank of Drum-Major. He was age 25 in 1862 when the unit was formed. He is mentioned several times in the books and records of the unit. Quoting Zenas T. Haines's, published as In The Country Of The Enemy, edited by William C Harris he was the Chief Musician and under the leadership of H.H. Ingraham the band grew into a fine institution under the labors of these men.
Other references to George L. Babcock in the files of the regiment indicate he was last in Oakland, California about 1900.
A George L. Babcock is recorded numerous times as being the first American student at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music, entering in 1843. He would have been about 6 years old. He played the pianoforte. He is also mentioned as being one of the many students taking lessons using the famed Boston Modern methods in 1861.
He may be related to Alpheus Babcock, the famous inventor of piano frame improvements and maker of many Babcock pianos in Boston in the early 1800's. Refer to Wikipedia for more details of this person.
