The surname of the George Valentin Butcher line was originally Metzger. George was born with this surname, emigrated to America with it and began using the English "Butcher" about 1859. George Valentin Butcher was born George Valentin Metzger in Germany about 1715 and died in present day Pendleton County WV in February 1773. He was a son of Johann Philip Metzger, who died in Nieder-Linxweiler, Germany December 24 , 1738. On February 19, 1736, Johann Adam Metzger, George Valen tin's brother, married Maria Catherine Scherer in Nieder-Linxenweiler. On December 6, 1739, George Valentin married Maria Elizabeth Kiefer in Nieder-Linxenweiler. Maria was a daughter of Johan Wilhelm Kiefer of Nieder-Linexweiler. George was listed as a "kiefer" or barrel maker. George Valentin and his family were granted manumission for 30 florins March 23,1749. Manumission meant that all their obligations to the country of their birth were fulfilled and they were free to travel to another country. No record of their emigration to America has been discovered, but George sued Nicholas Bunderick in Frederick County MD court in June 1750. There is no record of George's move to Augusta County VA, but it may have been as early as 1754. In February 1759 , George bought items at John Vinegard's estate sale in February 1759 as "Valentine Bucher". In December 1759, "Velentine Mitsker" was a witness to John Colly's Will. "Valentine Butcher" bought items at Jacob Silver's estate sale in August 1761 and in February 1762 Valentine Butcher posted bail for Jacob Archenbright in Augusta County Court.
