 	 George played a low profile in his fathers politics and appeared to be on good terms with King James I but the King used the excuse of his fathers treason to forfeit the earldoms.  Thereafter he became simply Sir George Dunbar of Kilconquhar.

George Dunbar, 10th and last Earl of Dunbar/March; knighted 1424, was removed in 1434 from the Earldom & and all Scottish lands by James I of Scotland on the pretext that the 9th Earl's negotiations for allegiance in 1406 were with the Regent, when legally they should have been with the King himself, hence that the Earldom and estates remained forfeited because of the 9th Earl's treason. (The real reason being James's determination to end the power of the only-intermittently loyal Earls ofDunbar once and for all.) The 10th Earl fled to England where he was paid a paltry sum from Scottish sources until his death. James I was rid of an often times disloyal Earldom. [Burke's Peerage] GEORGE (DUNBAR), EARL OF MARCH, or DUNBAR [SCT], son and heir, born about 1370, being about 50 in 1420. He, who was knighted at the Coronation of James I, consented in 1409 (with his father) to the alienation of the Lordship of Annandale to the Earl of Douglas. He was employed in negotiating thefreedom of Jarnes I, whorn he met at Durham, in 1424; on his return to Scotland. He was arrested with the Duke of Albany [SCT], but sat on his trial in May 1425; was in frequent embassies to England, and was, in 1430, one of the sponsors of PrinceJames, afterwards James II. In 1434, however, the King, on the pretence of his holding an Earldom and estates which had been forfeited by his father's treason, whose pardon being by a Regent only (not an actual King) was alleged to be invalid, seized his lands, had the case referred to Parliament, by which it was declared at Perth, 10 January 1434/5, that the Earldom and estates were forfeited. At the same time the King conferred on him "the empty title" of EARL OF BUCHAN, but he never assumed it, and within 10 years it was granted elsewhere. The Earl fled to England, retaining only the Barony of Kilconquhar, co. Fife, held from the Bishop of St. Andrews. He married Beatrice, who died before 1421. On 7 August 1421 he had license to marry Alice, daughter of Sir William HAY, of Yester, but it is uncertain if this marriage ever took place. He died between 1455 and 1457, aged over 80, having had since 9 April 1449 (when he was styled Comes Marchiarum et Dominus de Kilconquhar)anannuity of 400 marks out of the revenues of the Earldom. GEORGE Dunbar ([1370]-[1455/57]). He succeeded his father in [1420] as 10th Earl of Dunbar. James II King of Scotland seized his lands in 1434 on the pretence of the invalidity of the pardon granted to his father in 1409, confirmed by parliament 10 Jan 1435 when his title and estates were declared forfeited. At the same time, the king conferred on him the empty title of Earl of Buchan which he never used. He fled to England[1488]. m BEATRICE, daughter of --- (-before 1421). [1489]Betrothed (Papal dispensation 7 Aug 1421) to ALICE Hay, daughter of Sir WILLIAM Hay of Locherwort and Yester & his wife Alice [de la Haye of Erroll]. The Papal dispensation for the marriage of "Georgii de Dunbar comitis Marchiarum regni Scotie" and "Halysie Wilhelim de Haya militis quondam domini de Uhestyr nate", issued by Pope Martin V, is dated 7 Aug 1421[1490]. She later married Gilbert de la Haye of Erroll. Earl George & his wife had one child:

    George Dunbar, 10th Earl of Dunbar was born circa 1370.1 He was the son of George Dunbar, 9th Earl of Dunbar and Christian de Seton.1,2 He married Beatrice (?) in 1421.3 He died between 1455 and 1457.1

In consequence GEORGE took flight to England, where he was paid a paltry sum from Scottish sources till his death.3 Simultaneously fobbed off with the cosmetic title EARL OF BUCHAN (never assumed by GEORGE and conferred to another person altogether a few years after).3 He gained the title of 10th Earl of Dunbar. He gained the title of 3rd Earl of March. On 7 August 1421 possibly married 2nd c Alice, dau of Sir William Hay of Yester (see TWEEDDALE, M), though the marriage may never have occurred at all.3 In 1424 knighted.3 In 1434 deprived of the Earldom by JAMES I on the pretext that the allegiance renewed by his (the 10th EARL's) f after 1406 had been invalid since negotiated with a Regent rather than King regnant, hence that the Earldom and estates remained forfeited bec.3

George de Dunbar, 11th Earl of Dunbar & March[1][2] Lord of Annandale[3] and the Isle of Man[4], (c. 1370 – after 1457) was the last of his family to hold these titles.

He was aged about fifty when he succeeded his father, George de Dunbar, 10th Earl of March and Dunbar, (1340-1420). "George de Dunbarre son of the Earl of March" had a Safe-conduct to pass through England with twenty horsemen to go "beyond the seas" and return, dated March 19, 1399. In August 1405 he was Lieutenant of the castle of Cockburnspath, Berwickshire[5], and was engaged in various public transactions during his father's lifetime. In 1390 he obtained from King Robert II a grant of his ward-relief and marriage for the Earldom of March and lordship of Annandale; and he acted as a Commissioner for liberating from English captivity Murdoch, son of the Regent Albany, on December 7, 1411,[6] and in 1415. "George de Dounbar, son and heir of the Earl of the Marches of Scotland" had a further Safe-conduct, with numerous other nobles to travel to England between 1416-1419.[7]

On August 19, 1423 "George, Earl of March" and his brother Sir Patrick de Dunbar of Beil were named as part of the illustrious embassy sent to negotiate the liberation of King James I of Scotland who had long been a captive in England.[8]

On March 28, 1424, the Earl of March was one of the Conservators of the seven-year truce with England, and had the honour of meeting James I and his consort at Durham upon their return to Scotland. He was also present at their Coronation in Scone on May 24, 1424, when he was knighted.

However the following year the earls of Dunbar and Douglas, with the Duke of Albany, and twenty other feudal barons, were suddenly arrested and confined by order of parliament after accusations of corruption in Scottish affairs during James's absence. Albany and his sons, with his father-in-law the Earl of Lennox were beheaded, but the Earl of Dunbar and most of the other barons were set at liberty, their guilt being less apparent.

In 1427 the earls of Dunbar and Douglas obtained, in London, a truce from King Henry VI of England for two years, which Sir Robert Umfraville, governor of Berwick-upon-Tweed had refused.

George, Earl of March was next employed in negotiating more temporary truces with England in June 1429 and the following January[9]; and officiated as sponsor for King James II of Scotland at Holyroodhouse in October 1430.

[edit] Conspiracy and downfall

In 1434 Dunbar and his son Patrick were twice in England and the usual jealosies of the Crown and opponents in Scotland were aroused, and a plan was hatched to forfeit the Dunbars, the earl being arrested upon his return and confined in Edinburgh Castle, while the Earl of Angus, Chancellor Crichton, and Sir Adam Hepburn of Hailes, were despatched with Letters to the Keeper of Dunbar Castle who immediately surrendered it to the King's authority, Hepburn being left as Constable of the important fortress.

In a parliament which assembled at Perth on January 10, 1435, George, Earl of March, Lord of Dunbar, etc., was accused, not for any treason committed by himself, but for holding his earldoms and estates which were claimed to have been forfeited by his father. the following day "in vain did he plead," says Sir Robert Douglas, "that his father had been pardoned and restored by Albany", and it was answered "that a forfeiture incurred for treason could not be pardoned by a Regent".

The forfeited Earl retired into obscurity in England. A Safe-conduct warrant was signed for "George, Earl of Dunbar, with twenty-four horsemen" at Westminster on October 31, 1435.[10] However it appears he may have been still alive in 1457 when he is mentioned (still as "Earl of March") in a charter to his son, Patrick de Dunbar, of the lands and barony of Kilconquhar, in Fife, held of the Archbishop of St. Andrews as superior.

The Earl is said to have married twice: (1) c. 1390, Beatrix (family unknown), by whom he had his "eldest son", the aforementioned Patrick[11], and in 1421, a dispensation was granted for him to marry as his second wife, Hawise (or Alicia), daughter of Sir William de Hay, Knt., of Locherworth, Peebleshire.[12] The two wives were said to be closely related to each other, and he to them both.

His eldest son, Patrick, of Kilconquhar, Fife, Master of The March, married Elisabeth Sinclair.[13]

Another son, George, entered the church. On February 12, 1433, he was described as "son of the Earl of March, noble on both sides", when he Supplicated the Pope to provide him to the canonry and prebendary of Linton, in the collegiate church of Dunbar at £70 per annum.[14]
