About George Dyason, Snr, SV/PROG 4

From SOUTH-AFRICA-IMMIGRANTS-BRITISH-L Archives Tessa King

There were three brothers who arrived in South Africa with their families as part of the 1820 Settler Scheme. They were Isaac, George & Joseph: Dyason's Party

1. George DYASON * 15 Jul 1791 Ramsgate, Kent d. 7 Aug 1862 Port Elizabeth mar 27 July 1816 to Frances Ann HUTCHINSON * 1791 England d. 29 Aug 1828 Grahamstown (fm Jennifer). Their children were:

  • a. George Francis Sharp DYASON * 13 Jul 1817 England d. 23 Apr 1821 E Cape.
  • b. George Joseph DYASON * 1818 England died bef 1827 E Cape.
  • c. Frances Ann DYASON * 14 Mar 1819 England d. 27 Jul 1894.
  • d. Charles George DYASON * 26 Feb 1822 Bathurst d. 10 June 1872 at Richmond. I am not sure whether this is Richmond in the Cape or Kwa-Zulu Natal. Tessa King
  • e. George Joseph DYASON * 11 May 1827, bapt 14 Sept 1828, d. 19 June 1851 Etterick Hill, Fort Beaufort during the 8th Frontier War.

After the death of Frances in 1828 George would have been left with young children for whom he had to care. He hired Elizabeth VERITY as his housekeeper as per "The Albany Chronicles". My guess is that her husband had deserted her or left the area. [Tessa King] Confirmed perhaps by the fact that he was in Uitenhage when she started working for George. As happened very often with the Settlers, George and Elizabeth obviously became involved and started having children. They could not marry because her husband (James GOOSTREE or Goostrey or John Christopher GOLDSHAW) was "missing". One would assume that they had to have got divorced some time before 1841.

George then married Elizabeth VERITY on 18 Nov 1841 at St. John's Anglican Church, Bathurst. She was born 6 Apr 1805 in England and died 19 Feb 1869 at Port Elizabeth. Some of the children who had been born prior to this date were baptised on the same day and the minister actually states "child of George DYASON, Justice of the Peace, of Rokeby Park near Bathurst and Eliza, now his wife". Their children were:

  • e. Charlotte * 28 Jul 1831 Grahamstown bapt 14 Sept 1834 in the Grahamstown Anglican Church, Entry 869 as the dau of Elizabeth VERITY - no father mentioned. Died unknown.
  • f. Oliver * 7 Apr 1833 Grahamstown d. 28 Oct 1833 Grahamstown. Does not appear to have been baptised.

8g. Juliana * 19 Aug 1834 Grahamstown bapt 14 Sept 1834 at Grahamstown Anglican Church, Entry 870. Died 3 June 1916.

The next three children were baptised the same day Elizabeth and George were married at St. John's Anglican Church, Bathurst - Entries 263-265:

  • h. D'Urban * 13 Sept 1837 Bathurst d. 31 Jul 1901.
  • i. Henry * 2 Jul 1839 Bathurst d. 9 Aug 1902 Kimberley.
  • j. Roger * 13 Jan 1841 Bathurst d. 30 Nov 1907.
  • k. Susannah Amelia Strivens * 29 June 1842 Bathurst, bapt 5 Mar 1843 St. John's Bathurst Entry 298, d. 22 Apr 1915 Cape Town.
  • l. Robert * 25 Feb 1844 Bethlehem, Free State bapt 24 Mar 1844 St. John's Bathurst and d. 27 Jan 1894 'Rietuler', Heidelberg.
  • m. Rhoda * 4 Mar 1846 Bathurst, bapt 11 Mar 1846 d. 12 Mar 1846 Bathurst, buried 13 Mar 1846 at St. John's Bathurst, Entry 69.
  • n. Eliza * 18 Nov 1847 Bathurst, bapt 25 Dec 1847 St. John's Bathurst, Entry 391 d. 27 Feb 1887.
