About George Felt, I

George Felt or Felch was christened 28 Feb 1609 at Reach, Bedforshire. He immigrated to Massachusetts Bay in or before 1633 as he was an inhabitant of Charlestown in 1633. In the first division of lands at Mystic Side he received the five acre lot numbered 17; and in the later great allotment he had his proportion of land in five acres in Scadan, on the northern edge of the great swamp, and 20 acres "above ye ponds." These lands appear in the Book of Possessions in 1638, with other lands which he had purchased from the allotments ot Mystic Side and elsewhere within the bounds of Charlestown. He had married Elizabeth Wilkinson probably in Massachusetts Bay before 1640. She is supposed to have been the daughter of John and Prudence Wilkinson of Bedfordshire, England

At this time he lived in his house on the Charlestown side; he soon crossed the river and built upon land which he had aquired near the south spring, where his house is mentioned in 1640.

About 1641, George Felt became a landholder at Wescustogo, or Brand Cove, now North Yarmouth, in Casco Bay, where he obtained along with --?--Philips two thousand acres, from the Indians. There he built a stone trading-house or garrison. It is supposed he was a trader along the eastern coast. His storehouse, in a convient location, was the headquarters of himself and his men during the season of traffic, and a safe place of deposit for his goods. From here he extended his enterprises along the coast and, perhaps, into the country for short distances, and around it the savages gathered, trading their skins and firsh for his powder, his beads, his blankets and strong waters.

While he was engaged at the east ward, his wife and young family remained at Mysitc Side. In 1648 he is styled "George Felch, inhabitant in Charlestown, on Mystic Syde;" and after the incorporation of Malden he continued an inhabitant of Mystic Side, but not of Malden.

During the troubles which followed the outbreak of the indian war of 1675-6, the eastern coast was swept of it's inhabitants and the improvements which the thrifty settlers had made were destroyed.

After the indian troubles had closed in 1678, he is supposed to have returned to his possessions at Broad Cove, where he remained but a short time, parting with a portion of his land to Walter Gendall in 1680 and losing the two thousand acres he and Philips had purchased from the Indians. He was left in a destitute condition.

Although, since his settlement in Massachusetts Bay he had never been of Malden, he wert there where his son-in-law, James Nichols, who had married Mary Felt, was an inhabitant. In 1686 the town of Malden refused to support the Felts, perhaps, because they had been inhabitants of Charlestown and had not gone to Malden until they were in a condition to become public charges. It, therefore, fell to James Nichols to care for his mother and father-in-law until their deaths. George Felt died in Malden in 1693 and Elizabeth Wilkenson Felt died there the following year.

Born by about 1614 ("deposed 20 (11) 1654" aged about 40; the age given in his petition of about 1688 is probably exaggerated by about a decade). A mason who came to Massachusetts Bay in 1633. First settled in Charlestown; then moved to Malden, then Casco by 1662, & finally back to Malden. Died in Malden after 1692. Married by 1635 Elizabeth, daughter of widow Prudence Wilkinson; she was admitted to Charlestown church 19 January 1639/40; apparently died after 1692. A contributor notes: Almost all records and histories for George state that he was born in 1601 in England. There is one history that gives an exact birth date of 28 February 1601, but when I bring the link up I cannot find exactly where it says that. If you would like to look further into that link, it is at http://interactive.ancestry.com/61 157/46155_b289876-00014/1204913?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/per son/tree/26307435/person/12189241665/facts/citation/560260002102/edit/record. But at the very least, it appears that he was born in 1601.

According to the following paragraph, it appears that the town in which they resided took up a fund to provide for the funeral expenses of George Felt and his wife Elizabeth, as their family was not there to provide. George and Elizabeth appear to be held in high honor within the town.

As written in The Felt Genealogy: A Record of the Descendents of George Felt of Casco Bay, listed in North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000 for George Felt, First Generation, page 19: The aged couple were now evidently growing feebler, and the town voted, March 14, 1692, with a prudent provision for rebate in case its charity should prove overgenerous “that the towne doealow goodman nicols aleuen pound in or of money for this present yeare ensuingfor the maintanance of his father and mother felt, if ether of them dy with inthe year, after funiral charges, what is left to return to the selectman orthere order.” The record ends here. The sturdy pioneer whose advent at North Yarmouth was reckoned as its “birth-day,”and whose courageous manhood helped to establish it firmly upon the foundation of its prosperity it enjoys to-day; wronged in his old age by those who should have aided him instead; driven out to seek a home of charity; assure that his “funiral expenses” were provided for, died in1693 aged 92 years, and his wife “much advance in years” followed him in 1694. http://interactive.ancestry.com/61157/46155_b289711-00099/695162?ba... /www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/26307435/person/130075801830/facts/cit ation/560260083263/edit/record
