About George Haffenden, Snr
Inherited lands at Tenterden (50 acres purchased from Richard Glover of Benenden) from father, Jurat Robert Haffenden in will of 1613, for whom Robert's elder brother John Haffenden entered into bonds, 1 March 11th year of James I, during his minority under the terms of the will.
George's will dated 20 June 1644, proved 23 July 1644 (PRC 16/242/499):
"I George Haffenden of Tenterden, yeoman, this 20th of June 1644, give to my wife Joan all wearing apparel, jewels etc., and further, I give £100.
I give to my son George Haffenden one third of all my messuage and lands in Tenterden, but he shall not enter or receive profits until 21.
I give unto my daughter Rebecca Haffenden one third of my said messuage and lands at the age of 18 or when she be married, provided that Thomas Haffenden and Richard Haffenden my sons shall pay to my said son George the sum of £200 when 21; and the sum of £100 to my
said daughter Rebecca at 18 or marriage. And if George should die, then Thomas and Richard shall pay Rebecca £200, and if Rebecca die, then they shall pay George £300; and if both die, then they shall pay Joan £100; then the two-thirds of my said messuage and lands to my said sons, Thomas and Richard.
I give the other third part of my said messuage and lands in Tenterden to my daughter Sarah Haffenden and her heirs forever at 18 or marriage, provided always that Thomas and
Richard shall pay her £100 and if she (not) live or marry, the gift to be utterly void and the said third go to Thomas and Richard equally divided.
I will and devise to my brother Richard Haffenden my messuage and lands in Tenterden, to have and to hold until such time as my son Thomas Haffenden be 24 and my son Richard Haffenden be 24, upon confidence that the profits be disposed towards the performance of this will.
My executor shall pay my wife interest at the rate of £8 per
annum until the £100 legacy be paid. My wife shall educate and bring up my children George and Rebecca, and shall receive out of the profits the yearly sum of £15. I give to her the table and carpet in my parlour for her use and then to George and shall have her dwelling in the house we now live. I give to her all the geese and poultry that remains after my funeral.
And I desire my brother Richard to bring up my children Richard and Sarah.
I make and ordain my brother Richard Haffenden to be my sole executor.
Witnesses: Richard Reeves, Sarah Iggleden (oldest sister)"
After being widowed, George's second marriage was by licence dated 17 October 1638 to marry at either
Halden or Kennardington. Joan Andrew of Ashford, widow. They married at High Halden, 6 December 1638 and Joan is mentioned in her husband's will, 1644;
Joan Haffenden was possibly previously married to Nicholas Emmet at Tenterden, 2 December 1646 (IGI).
