Notes by Wayne Stafford: George Hanks the first son of Moses Hanks and Aggatha Dodson Hanks was born 6 June 1773 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia and died 1 September 1859 in Anderson County, Texas. He was more than likely buried in the Old Antioch Cemetery, located east of Montalba, Texas. His brother Rev. Thomas Hanks and several other family members from the same time period are buried in this cemetery. George moved to Kentucky (Pulaskie County) from Virginia in 1797 where he was granted title to 200 acres of land on 27 September 1798. This was the last time Moses and George appeared on the tax rolls of Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

In June 1806 George sold his land in Kentucky and moved to Williamson County, Tennessee. Later this county was divided and George was in Maury County, Tennessee. Many of the families from this county would eventually move to Anderson County, Texas. From the "Record of Commissioned Officers in Tennessee" George was listed as a Captain of the 46th Regiment of Maury County on 19 May 1813. As an officer of the Tennessee Militia, George was the tax collector for his district. Lawrence County was formed in 1817 and George held several offices: Election judge, Justice of the Peace, and overseer of road. By 1825 he was in Harderman County, Tennessee along with a large number of relatives. On 8 November 1825 his daughter Elizabeth Hanks married Uriah Stafford, and on 11 January 1828 his son, Hansford H. Hanks married Susan Margaret Foster. By 1832 George had moved to Mississippi.

According to land grant records George Hanks had moved to Texas by September 1836. He was issued land grants from the Republic of Texas, a total of 2460 acres of land in Shelby County, Texas. In 1846 George married a young widow, Mrs. Angelina Sutton.
