About George Hillier
GEORGE HILLIER, farmer, is a native of Gloucestershire, England, and was born in 1826. He left school when young and went into a cloth factory, and remained at the trade for three years. In 1840 he came to South Australia with his parents, and on his arrival was variously employed in ordinary labor. He then worked with his father in Adelaide at the wheelwright's trade, which he continued at for a time. He then went to the goldfields in Victoria, and after being there for a short time returned to the Colony, and came to the Gawler River. He owns a 400-acre block of freehold land here, and leases two sections besides. He cultivates one-half every year. His chief products are wheat and hay, and he also does a good deal in the dairying line, and in pig breeding, which he finds very payable. He has been a member of the District Council, and was a member of the Oddfellows at one time. Mr. Hillier was married in 1851 to Miss Hooper, and has a family living of three sons and seven daughters, The eldest son, John, is about 33 years of age. In politics he is a supporter of Freetrade principles.
