About George N Holbert

George died in service during the Civil War. However, it seems he may have been wounded in fighting and evacuated to a hospital in Memphis, where he died or he died of a non-battle related problem.

GEDCOM Note

I was not sure George Edward Holbert born 1834 was a son of Benjamin Holbert, for12 years I couldn't find what other family he would fit into by age, date and area, other than William or Benjamin Holbert, could find no census or other proof, so temporarily placed him with this family. until I could find additional info. (Finally in May 2011- I asked kls to look up the will of Benjamin F. Holbert, and verification was found where he mentions " I give bequeath and devise unto the boy now residing with me CALLED BY THE FAMILY GEORGE HOLBERT, BUT SUPPOSED TO BE GEORGE VAIL and to his heirs and assigns all that certain tract or piece of land situate in the township of Berlin in the county of Wayne). The relationship stated in his Will drafted 12 March 1851 when George Vails was age 17. Bev Branning Green

8/20/09 Scott May: Don't know if you're still researching Holberts, my main line of research is Branning & Lassley & various connecting lines like Holbert. My tree Branning- Brannon-Brennan-Lassley by olsalte is on Ancestry. some of your connections differ from mine, but mainly I was trying to figure out how/where George Edward Holbert 18April 1834 fits in. Have no verification of George Edward Holberts descendancy from Benjamin Holbert, just used a process of elimination & dates, he could either be the son of [1] William Holbert 17Apr1801- 24May1843 married to a dau of Stephen Kimble, gr son of Benjamin F. Holbert Sr. 23 Dec1781 -4May1856 & Mary Rider or [2] Benjamin Holbert 1802-1881 wife unknown [listed as single in 18-- census, gr son of Joseph Holbert 1779 & Abbey Rose, gr gr son of Whm Holbert 1752 & Mary Showers. I favor #2 for several reasons: [a] George Edward Holberts father in law Oba'diah' Rogers had John Lassley 1792 widower of Mary Branning working on his farm in 1850 census. [b] John & Mary Lassleys son Cornelius 1822 married Josephine Holbert 1827 dau of Joseph G. Holbert 1803 & Sabra Brown, gr dau of Benjamin Holbert 1781 & Mary Rider, gr gr dau of Whm Holbert 1752.

[c] Joseph G. Holbert 1803, son of Benjamin Holbert 1781 and Benjamin Holbert 1781 (the father) both named sons born the same year of 1834 George. Josephs son married Phoebe Brown & Ella Remson. Benjamins son married Mary Jane Rogers -they moved to MN following her parents. [d] Obadiah Rogers moved to MN, dau Mary Jane & spouse George Edward Holbert followed, George Edward enlisted in 7th MN Infantry 17Aug1862 and was killed 28Feb1865 in Memphis ,TN. Mary Janes father died in Homer, MN, she and her children remained in MN even though her gr fa Obadiah 1770 d. in Lackawaxen Twp, PA [e] Scotty May who I've been unable to reach suggests the father is Benjamin Holbert. Doubt he has any further info than what is posted online though. After 12 years of researching the Holberts & connecting lines, I hesitate to even record this connection . It's been like working a crossword puzzle figuring out the various Branning/ Lassley/ Holbert/ Hornbeck intertwined relationships correctly, especially with missing census info and incorrect copying of records . Then inexperienced newbies come along and add extra children and families by their nicknames thereby making incorrect connections without doing their homework. So let me restate that this is just a hypothetical connection of George Edward Holbert as the son of Benjamin until I have definite proof.

PROOF FOUND: (by bbg & kls May 2011 research - WILL) (Benjamin Holbert b. 1781 adopted George Edward Vail Holbert- relationship stated in his Will drafted 12 March 1851 when George was age 17.)

Interestingly - noticed under Sarah Tylers notes that a Capt. Benjamin VAIL died at the Battle of Minisink. So I checked on Ancestry and found a file of Genl Abraham Vail; b 1771 with a son Benjamin Vail b. 1800 in Goshen, NY but it doesn't list any descendents, so don't know if he might have had another son George Edward b. 1834.-bbg

GEDCOM Note

Janet, saw your note about visiting the Vail farm, which stirred me to looking at my Vail info again and the George Edward Vail (b.1834) that Benjamin Holbert adopted. You may already have this all figured out, since you visited the Vail farm. But I think Jay L. Vail b.c.1970 is s/o Carl Vail b.c.1945 & Chloe, s/o Carryl Vail b. 1896 & unknown, s/o James Vail 1869 & Rhetta Pethick, d/o Stephen Pethick 1837 & Susan Barnes 1837, d/o John Barnes & Elizabeth Holbert 1799, d/o Benjamin Holbert 1781 and 1st wf Mary Ryder. With 2nd wife Zephyr, Benjamin adopted George Edward Vail; because he had 12 children, 7 of them dying young-in their twenties, 6 of them before 1848, possibly about the time he adopted George Edward Vail. At say age 14?, George is with the Holberts in the 12Aug 1850 Census at age 16. Benjamin Holbert made his will 12 Nov1851 - 7 months later mentioning George. (I sent you a copy of it).

Then on checking the Vails in the area, the only one I find that George Edward Vail b.1834 could have belonged to was Samuel Knapp Vail 1810 & Mary Cooper, probably their 1st child.(before their marriage) Samuel s/o Benjamin Vail 1776, s/o William Vail 1736, s/o Capt. Benjamin Vail 1706, per trees on Ancestry. Samuel K. Vails listing in the 1850 census does not include George E. Vail .Samuel didn't marry until Sep 1836 so, did they adopt this 1st child out immediately?? Or c. 1848?(an unknown Vail child is listed in the Barnes tree on Ancestry)

Excerpt from Will of Benjamin Holbert: This last mentioned devise is not to take effect or to be operative unless the said GEORGE BE WILLING TO RESIDE WITH ME OR IN MY FAMILY UNTIL AGE OF 21 AND DURING THAT TIME BEHAVES HIMSELF AS A GOOD AND FAITHFUL BOY. Should he choose to remain in my family after my death a reasonable education and so long as he is willing to remain with him and direct him to provide with clothing maintenance and receiving from them, services in return. George Holbert took $500 in lieu of 428 ac tract of land in Berlin Twp., (Benjamin Holbert died 4May1856 over a year after George E.Holbert was 21) George E. married MaryJane Rogers from PA; abt 1854, George was 21 on18Apr1855; had his 1st child in 1855 in PA & 2nd son in 1857 in MN per 1870 Census; His adoptive father died 4May 1856, so George E. probably moved to Homer, Winona, Minnesota after Benjamin Holberts death.( The reason for the move was probably because Mary Janes family was listed as having moved out there in the 1870 census.) George E. Holbert at age 26 Enlisted in a MN Regiment 17 Aug 1862, Mustered out /died on 28 Feb 1865 & is buried TN Memphis National Cemetery. He fathered 6 children before his death. They all remained in MN
