About George Hutzel
The Hutsells (Hutsel, Hutsill, Hutzell, Hootsil) came to what is now Wythe County in the 1780s, and George owned land as early as 1782, although the grant for his 238 acres, following a survey made in May 1782, was not issued until 1786. On 18 March 1789, George Hutsel wrote his will, and it was probated on August 13, 1793, more than four years after it was written. The exact date of his death is unknown. However, his wife was listed as the widow Hutsell on the personal property tax list on 2 June 1789, so he must have died shortly after writing his will. He names his wife Marget, and gives her one horse beast. His land went to his two oldest sons. George was to have 5 pounds more out of the lands than the others. The wife could have the land as long as she "keeps" a widow. When the boys became of age, they had permission to sell the land. The rest of the boys to have equal shares, with John, and the girls to have half as much as the boys. The "movebles" were to be "capt" together until the widow marries again or one of the children marries. George made his X. Witnesses were Henry Helvey and John Davis. No inventory of the estate was recorded.
