About George Beck Lervick
George was born Jorgen Johnnessen Naverli on Jun 19, 1892 in Hemnes, Norway. He attended school for what looked like 7 years at the Larvik School. When he came to the states in 1908, he took the name of the school he attended as he thought it was easier than his name. He left Norway at the age of sixteen with his brother John, leaving his mother and father, Johannes Jacobsen and Bergette and 2 brothers. He arrived in the US in 1908 and headed west. He finally homesteaded in the Hell Creek and Snow Creek area of Garfield County. When World War I broke out he went to serve his new country. He was very proud to have served in the 35th Balloon CO in France and throughout Europe. He returned to Garfield County in 1920, returning to his wife Christine Gretchen Ness who he had married in January of 1918 in Miles City. They lived on the land George had homesteaded and Christine sold her homestead as it was too far from George's. They made their home close to the homesteads of Christine's sister's who were now Hauso's, MacDonald's and Engdahl's. They had 6 children, Rolfe Lervick born 8-1-16, Melville Lervick 1918 or 19-1924, who according to the Jordan Tribune, died of Infantile Paralysis at the age of 6, Clifford Lervick born 9-28-20, Nina Lervick Hetherington, born 6-5-22, Georgia Lervick Cantlon, born 11-18-24, and Alfhild Louise Lervick who was born on 4-9-30 and died on 9-24-30 of what is today termed crib death. George and Christine remained on the Lervick homestead, and raised their children there. George herded cows to Ingomar, traded at Fort Peck and Miles City and enjoyed his family. He often spoke in his thick Norwegian English of going back to Norway. He never made the trip back although he did have his brothers visit the states. Christine died in 1952 but George remained on the farm. His eye sight was deteriorating and for many things he depended on the neighbors and yet not for much. He was independent to the end and he remained on the land he homesteaded until his death on Jun 24, 1969 in Miles City. He is buried in Pioneer Cemetery in Jordan.
