About George Marsh
Both George Marsh and his bother-in-law, William Lewis Gilbert, were associated with the clockmaking firm of Samuel Terry in Plymouth, CT in 1827 and subsequently in Bristol in 1828, until purchasing the Elias Roberts & Co clockmaking factory in Bristol and apparently subcontractors for clockmaking for adjoining clockmaker Chauncey Jerome. Research indicates that the Farmington clockmaking firm of Marsh Gilbert & Co was created c1833 by George Marsh and William L Gilbert (perhaps with Cornelius Robbins Williams in the background) until Gilbert returned to Bristol in 1834, and it appears that the firm of George Marsh & Co (with Cornelius R Williams as the "& Co") succeeded in Farmington village, before George Marsh left for Ohio to set up a new firm there, Marsh, Williams & Co., which appears to have been supplied with clock movements by Farmington/Unionville clock firm Orton, Preston & Co and its successor, Williams, Orton, Prestons & Co..
