Obituary: An Old Timer George Washington McCreary, a former citizen of Pemberville, who died recently at Toledo, was a "forty-niner." In 1849 with a company from Delaware, Morrow and Knox counties, he made a trip to California, going by the way of Cincinnati, and the Ohio and Mississippi river to St. Joseph, MO., thence over land on foot and by wagon. In 1851 he returned to Ohio and in the same year went back to California. In 1852 he returned to Ohio again via the Isthmus of Panama to New York. In 1853 he again decided on another trip to California, this time going by way of New York and Cape Horn, a distance of 14000 miles. He returned to Morrow County, Ohio in 1859. Shortly after this he moved to Wood County, where he remained until March 1893, when he moved to Toledo to live with a daughter. At an early age he studied music and was a teacher of vocal music for many years. While living in Philadelphia he was connected with a prominent band in that city. He was "Fifer" on the first run on the first railroad built in America. At the age of 19 he made a trip over land to Puetown, near Philadelphia, where he worked at his trade as cabinet maker. On his return to Ohio he kept up his trade and while living on the Eisenhour Ridge made caskets for many in that locality. One of his daughters, Mrs. Jane Clink, lives near this place.
